Beautiful Antique Victorian Era Tunbridge Fold Out Marquetry Wood Jewelry/Keepsake Box with lock and Key. Pillow satin lined.
“Tunbridge ware is a type of marquetry, a decorative woodworking technique that involves gluing together thin strips of wood to create an intricate mosaic effect:
History
Tunbridge ware originated in the 18th century in the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. The technique was developed to create souvenirs for the wealthy patrons of the town's spas.
Method
Tunbridge ware is made by gluing thin strips and shaped rods of different colored woods together, then slicing them into thin veneers. The veneers are then applied to an object to create a mosaic or geometric pattern.
Materials
Local timbers like oak, holly, yew, sycamore, and maple were often used, along with foreign timbers like mahogany, rosewood, and ebony.”
